This piece was created as an homage to one of the most recognizable art pieces in the world: The Great Wave Off Kanagawa by Katsushika Hokusai. I wanted to recreate a classic print in a different medium with different colors.
The original woodblock print was meant to capture the awe-inspiring power of nature, evident in the size of the great wave towering over a tiny Mount Fuji in the background. I wanted to continue the theme of nature by using preserved reindeer moss in natural earth tones such as yellow, blue, and green. The moss proved to be surprisingly easy to shape into the intricate details of the original. On a side note, my cat Mochi approves of the piece.
